The Miguelete jail was the first jail built in Uruguay (at the
end of 1890, in what was then a suburban area of Montevideo): a kind of model jail where
inmates were rehabilitated through work and confined to individual cells. The jail was
used for almost a century as an establishment for the imprisonment of those of age. At the
end of the 1980s, it was assigned, for several years, to the imprisonment of minors, until
it was abandoned in the last few years.
