- With a total area of more than 100.000m2, the Hospital de
Clinicas (the Hospital of Clinics) is the largest hospital in Uruguay and one of the
largest university hospital buildings in Latin America. It was inaugurated in 1953 and
functioned as a national referral general hospital for adults in need of brief hospital
stays and highly complex care. Since the 1970s, the hospital has suffered increasing
budget cuts which have intensified its gradual decline and which have plunged it into a
deep crisis.
